[248] Making an effort and emitting semen (asuci), how many offences (āpatti) does one commit? Making an effort and emitting semen, one commits three offences: he intends, he makes an effort, and it is emitted — an offence entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa); he intends, he makes an effort, but it is not emitted — a grave offence (thullaccaya); in the act of exertion (payoga), an offence of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
