[284] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu dwelt in the forest having formed the intention, "Thus will people esteem me." People esteemed him. He became remorseful … "There is no offense entailing defeat (pārājika), bhikkhu. But, bhikkhus, one should not dwell in the forest having formed such an intention; whoever should so dwell commits an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu walked for alms having formed the intention, "Thus will people esteem me." People esteemed him. He became remorseful … "There is no offense entailing defeat, bhikkhu. But, bhikkhus, one should not walk for alms having formed such an intention; whoever should so walk commits an offense of wrongdoing."
