[365] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu, intending emission, inserted his member into a hole in a palmyra tree, and semen was emitted. … [The elision (pe) compresses the standard formula: he became remorseful, thinking, "Have I not committed an offense of saṅghādisesa?" and reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One asked, "Bhikkhu, what was your intention?" — "I intended emission, venerable sir." — "Bhikkhu, you have committed an offense of saṅghādisesa."] [Again, a certain bhikkhu, intending emission, inserted his member into a hole in a palmyra tree, but] semen was not emitted. He became remorseful … [thinking, "Have I not committed an offense of saṅghādisesa?" and reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One asked, "Bhikkhu, what was your intention?" — "I intended emission, venerable sir." —] "Bhikkhu, there is no offense of saṅghādisesa; there is an offense of thullaccaya."
