[577]* "Pretext of the bowl" (pattaleso) means: one bearing an iron bowl (lohapatta) has been seen … one bearing a clay bowl (mattikāpatta) has been seen … one bearing a sāṭaka bowl¹ has been seen … one bearing a sumbhaka bowl (a cheap, badly-fired bowl of gourd color) has been seen committing an offense entailing defeat (pārājika). Having then seen another bearer of a sumbhaka bowl, he charges him: "A bearer of a sumbhaka bowl was seen by me committing an offense entailing defeat; you are no ascetic, you are no son of the Sakyans … [there is no observance day (uposatha), no invitation (pavāraṇā),] nor any act of the Saṅgha (saṅghakamma) [in common with you]" — for each and every utterance there is an offense entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa).
