[579] "Pretext of the preceptor (upajjhāyalesa)" means: a co-resident pupil (saddhivihārika) of the preceptor named so-and-so has been seen committing an offense entailing defeat (pārājika). Having seen another co-resident pupil of the preceptor named so-and-so, the bhikkhu accuses him: "The co-resident pupil of the preceptor named so-and-so has been seen by me committing an offense entailing defeat; you are not an ascetic, you are not a son of the Sakyans, … [there is no uposatha, no pavāraṇā,] nor any act of the Saṅgha [in common with you]" — there is an offense entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa) for each and every utterance.
