[588] A **bhikkhu** is seen committing a grave offense (thullaccaya). [The accuser] has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is a grave offense … he has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya) … he has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is an offense to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya) … he has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa) … he has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is an offense of wrong speech (dubbhāsita) … he has the view, regarding the grave offense, that it is an offense entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa). If he accuses him of an offense entailing defeat (pārājika), saying, "You are no ascetic … or an act of the Saṅgha (saṅghakamma)" — even so [the legal issue] belongs to a different class of offense (āpatti), and a pretext (lesa) has been seized upon: there is an offense of saṅghādisesa for each and every utterance.
A bhikkhu is seen committing a pācittiya offense … A bhikkhu is seen committing a pāṭidesanīya offense … A bhikkhu is seen committing a dukkaṭa offense … A bhikkhu is seen committing a dubbhāsita offense. [The accuser] has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a dubbhāsita … he has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a saṅghādisesa … he has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a thullaccaya … he has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a pācittiya … he has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a pāṭidesanīya … he has the view, regarding the dubbhāsita, that it is a dukkaṭa. If he accuses him of a pārājika, saying, "You are no ascetic … or an act of the Saṅgha" — even so [the legal issue] belongs to a different class of offense, and a pretext has been seized upon: there is an offense of saṅghādisesa for each and every utterance.
Making each one the root, the wheel [of permutations] should be constructed.
