[72] Now at that time in Rājagaha there was a laywoman (upāsikā) named Supabbā, of soft, naive faith.¹ She held this view: "She who gives sexual intercourse (methuna dhamma) gives the supreme gift." Seeing a bhikkhu, she said this: "Come, venerable sir, engage in sexual intercourse." "Enough, sister; that is not allowable." "Come, venerable sir, exert yourself between the thighs;² in this way there will be no offence for you." That bhikkhu did so. He was remorseful. … "Bhikkhu, there is no offence entailing defeat (pārājika); there is an offence entailing initial and subsequent meetings of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa)."
