[89] **This one too:** this is said with reference to the former (bhikkhu).
**Is pārājika:** just as a withered leaf, fallen¹ from its stalk, is incapable of becoming green again, even so a bhikkhu, having taken what was not given—whether a pāda, or the worth of a pāda, or more than a pāda—in what is reckoned as theft, is not an ascetic (samaṇa), not a son of the Sakyan; therefore it is said, "is pārājika."
**Not in communion:** communion (saṃvāsa) means a common legal act (kamma), a common recitation (uddesa), the state of having the same training—this is called communion. That does not exist together with him; therefore it is said, "not in communion."
