Pārājikasikkhābada

Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga · Vol. 3 · Section 16

[16] **"This one too" (ayampi):** this is said with reference to the previous ones. **"Is pārājikā":** just as a withered leaf, released from its stem, is incapable of becoming green again, even so a bhikkhunī who, knowing that a bhikkhunī has committed an offense entailing expulsion (pārājika), casts off the responsibility, [thinking,] "I will neither reprove her myself nor inform the group" — at the mere casting off of the responsibility she is no ascetic, not a daughter of the Sakyan. Therefore it is said, "she is pārājikā." **"Not in communion" (asaṃvāsā):** communion (saṃvāsa) means a single [formal] act, a single recitation, equality of training — this is called communion. That does not exist together with her; therefore it is said, "not in communion." *[Editorial apparatus of the Siam Raṭṭha edition, retained in Pali:]* ¹ Burmese and European editions read: "yadā ca sā ṭhitā vā assa cutā vā" for "ṭhitā nāma." ² Burmese and European editions: "kālaṃkatā." ³ "aññāhī" is our preferred reading. ⁴ Burmese and European editions: "paṭicodeyyaṃ," or "sayaṃ vā na codeyyaṃ." ⁵ Burmese and European editions: "āroceyyanti." ⁶ Burmese and European editions: "āroceyyaṃ."
