[31] Brahmin, this thought occurred to me: 'Whatever ascetics or brahmins of unpurified bodily conduct (kāyakammanta) resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest — because of the defect of their unpurified bodily conduct, those worthy ascetics and brahmins surely summon up unwholesome fear and dread (bhayabherava). But I do not resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest with unpurified bodily conduct; I am one of purified bodily conduct. Of those noble ones who, being of purified bodily conduct, resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest, I am one.' Seeing in myself, brahmin, this purity of bodily conduct, I attained to still greater assurance (palloma) — my hair lying flat — for dwelling in the forest.
