[42] Brahmin, this thought occurred to me: "Whatever ascetics or brahmins with muddled mindfulness (sati), lacking clear comprehension, resort to remote lodgings in wilderness and forest thickets—because of the defect of muddled mindfulness and lack of clear comprehension, those worthy ascetics and brahmins surely call up unwholesome fear and dread. But I do not resort to remote lodgings in wilderness and forest thickets with muddled mindfulness, lacking clear comprehension; I am one whose mindfulness is established. I am one of those noble ones who, with mindfulness established, resort to remote lodgings in wilderness and forest thickets." Brahmin, seeing in myself this state of established mindfulness, I attained even greater assurance for dwelling in the forest.
