[220] Friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu (āraññaka bhikkhu) should make effort regarding superhuman states (uttarimanussadhamma). There are, friends, those who will ask a forest-dwelling bhikkhu a question about superhuman states. If, friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when asked a question about superhuman states, cannot answer, there will be those who say of him: 'What is the point of this venerable forest-dweller's dwelling alone in the forest at his own free will, seeing that this venerable does not know the very goal for the sake of which he went forth?' There will be those who say this of him. Therefore a forest-dwelling bhikkhu should make effort regarding superhuman states.
