[296] Bhikkhus, there are these five aggregates subject to clinging (pañcupādānakkhandhā). Which five? Namely: the aggregate subject to clinging that is form (rūpa) … the aggregate subject to clinging that is consciousness (viññāṇa). When, bhikkhus, a noble disciple understands as it really is (yathābhūta) the origin (samudaya), the passing away (atthaṅgama), the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in regard to these five aggregates subject to clinging — this one, bhikkhus, is called a noble disciple who is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to falling into states of woe, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination.
