[300] At Sāvatthī. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … Seated, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "'Ignorance (avijjā), ignorance,' it is said, venerable sir. What now, venerable sir, is ignorance, and in what way is one immersed in ignorance?"
"Here, bhikkhu, the uninstructed worldling (assutavā puthujjano) does not understand form, does not understand the origin of form, does not understand the cessation of form, does not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of form; he does not understand feeling (vedanā); he does not understand perception; he does not understand volitional formations; he does not understand consciousness … he does not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of consciousness. This, bhikkhu, is called ignorance, and in this way one is immersed in ignorance."
