[332] The same setting. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita: "'Ignorance, ignorance' (avijjā), friend Koṭṭhita, it is said. What now, friend, is ignorance, and in what way is one immersed in ignorance?"
"Here, friend, an uninstructed worldling (puthujjana) does not understand form (rūpa), does not understand the origin of form, does not understand the cessation of form, does not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of form; does not understand feeling (vedanā) … perception (saññā) … volitional formations (saṅkhārā) … does not understand consciousness (viññāṇa), does not understand the origin of consciousness, does not understand the cessation of consciousness, does not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of consciousness. This, friend, is called ignorance, and in this way one is immersed in ignorance."
