[320] At Sāvatthī. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'ignorance, ignorance (avijjā).' What now, venerable sir, is ignorance, and in what way is one immersed in ignorance?"
"Here, bhikkhu, the uninstructed worldling (assutavā puthujjano) does not understand as it really is form (rūpa) that is subject to arising as 'form is subject to arising'; he does not understand as it really is form that is subject to vanishing as 'form is subject to vanishing'; he does not understand as it really is form that is subject to arising and vanishing as 'form is subject to arising and vanishing.' He does not understand as it really is feeling (vedanā) that is subject to arising as 'feeling is subject to arising'; he does not understand as it really is feeling that is subject to vanishing as 'feeling is subject to vanishing' … he does not understand. He does not understand perception that is subject to arising … he does not understand. He does not understand as it really is volitional formations that are subject to arising as 'volitional formations are subject to arising'; he does not understand as it really is volitional formations that are subject to vanishing as 'volitional formations are subject to vanishing'; he does not understand as it really is volitional formations that are subject to arising and vanishing as 'volitional formations are subject to arising and vanishing.' He does not understand as it really is consciousness that is subject to arising as 'consciousness is subject to arising'; he does not understand as it really is consciousness that is subject to vanishing as 'consciousness is subject to vanishing'; he does not understand as it really is consciousness that is subject to arising and vanishing as 'consciousness is subject to arising and vanishing.' This, bhikkhu, is called ignorance, and in this way one is immersed in ignorance."
