[594] At Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four meditators (jhāyī). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is skilled in concentration (samādhi) regarding concentration, but is not one who does what is conducive (sappāyakārī) regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is one who does what is conducive regarding concentration, but is not skilled in concentration regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is neither skilled in concentration regarding concentration, nor one who does what is conducive regarding concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain meditator is both skilled in concentration regarding concentration and one who does what is conducive regarding concentration. Therein, bhikkhus, the meditator who is both skilled in concentration regarding concentration and one who does what is conducive regarding concentration — this one is, of these four meditators, the chief, the best, the foremost, the highest, and the finest. Just as, bhikkhus, from the cow comes milk … and the finest.
