[1252] Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge (abhiññā), for the full understanding (pariññā), for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters (uddhambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni), the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda) should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to desire (chanda) and volitional formations of striving (padhānasaṅkhāra); he develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind (citta) … concentration due to inquiry (vīmaṃsā) and volitional formations of striving. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters, these four bases of spiritual power should be developed.
