[227] Setting at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, just as whatever great rivers there are — that is to say, the Gaṅgā, the Yamunā, the Aciravatī, the Sarabhū, the Mahī — all of them slant toward the ocean, slope toward the ocean, incline toward the ocean; even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu developing the noble eightfold path (magga), cultivating the noble eightfold path, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna.
