[516] Setting at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, of the rising of the sun, this is the forerunner, this the precursor: namely, the arising of the dawn (aruṇugga). Just so, bhikkhus, for a bhikkhu, of the arising of the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), this is the forerunner, this the precursor: namely, good friendship (kalyāṇamittatā). Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu has a good friend, it is to be expected that he will develop the seven factors of awakening, that he will cultivate the seven factors of awakening.
