Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Mahāvaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 19 · Section 519

[519] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu accomplished in wise attention (yoniso manasikāra) develop the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), how does he cultivate the seven factors of awakening? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness (sati), which is based upon seclusion (viveka) … he develops the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā), which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation (nirodha), maturing in relinquishment (vossagga). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu accomplished in wise attention develops the seven factors of awakening and cultivates the seven factors of awakening."
