[410] And how, Bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, depending on virtue (sīla), established in virtue, develop the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) and cultivate the seven factors of awakening? Here, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness (sati), which depends on seclusion (viveka), depends on dispassion (virāga), depends on cessation, and matures in relinquishment … he develops the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā), which depends on seclusion, depends on dispassion, depends on cessation, and matures in relinquishment. It is in this way, Bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, depending on virtue, established in virtue, develops the seven factors of awakening and cultivates the seven factors of awakening.
