[775] "It is, friend, because the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) have not been developed and not been cultivated that the true Dhamma (saddhamma) declines. And it is, friend, because the four establishments of mindfulness have been developed and cultivated that the true Dhamma does not decline.
"Which four? Here, friend, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings … the mind (citta) in the mind … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world.
"It is, friend, because these four establishments of mindfulness have not been developed and not been cultivated that the true Dhamma declines. And it is, friend, because these four establishments of mindfulness have been developed and cultivated that the true Dhamma does not decline."
