Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Mahāvaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 19 · Section 1271

[1271] "It is, friends, because of having developed and cultivated the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) that I have attained greatness of direct knowledge (mahābhiññatta). Which four? Here, friends, I dwell contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassanā), ardent (ātāpī), clearly comprehending (sampajāno), mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world (abhijjhā-domanassa). I dwell contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings … the mind (citta) in the mind … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. It is, friends, because of having developed and cultivated these four establishments of mindfulness that I have attained greatness of direct knowledge. And further, friends, because of having developed and cultivated these four establishments of mindfulness, I directly knew the inferior state as inferior, I directly knew the middling state as middling, I directly knew the sublime state as sublime."
