[786] "Through having developed and cultivated which things has the Venerable Anuruddha attained to greatness of direct knowledge (mahābhiññatā)?"
"It is through having developed and cultivated the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), friend, that I have attained to greatness of direct knowledge. Which four? Here, friend, I dwell contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassī), ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. In feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … I dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. It is, friend, through having developed and cultivated these four establishments of mindfulness that I have attained to greatness of direct knowledge. And, friend, because I have developed and cultivated these four establishments of mindfulness, I directly know the thousandfold world."
