[1286] "Friends, it is because the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) have been developed and cultivated by me that I have attained greatness of direct knowledge (mahābhiññatta). Which four? Here, friends, I dwell contemplating the body in the body … I dwell contemplating [feelings (vedanā)] … [the mind (citta)] … dhammas in dhammas — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. It is because these four establishments of mindfulness have been developed and cultivated by me, friends, that I have attained greatness of direct knowledge. And it is because these four establishments of mindfulness have been developed and cultivated by me, friends, that I recollect a thousand eons."
