[800] Setting at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, these four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), when developed and cultivated, lead exclusively to disenchantment (nibbidā), to dispassion (virāga), to cessation, to peace (upasama), to direct knowledge (abhiññā), to full awakening (sambodha), to Nibbāna. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassanā), ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. In feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. These, bhikkhus, are the four establishments of mindfulness which, when developed and cultivated, lead exclusively to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna.
