Aññāsutta

Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Mahāvaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 19 · Section 805

[805] Origin at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings … the mind (citta) in the mind … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. These, bhikkhus, are the four establishments of mindfulness. Because these four establishments of mindfulness have been developed and cultivated, one of two fruits is to be expected: final knowledge (aññā) in this very life or, if there is a residue of clinging, the state of a non-returner.
