[825] Setting at Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu should dwell mindful. This is our instruction (anusāsanī) to you. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu mindful? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassī); he dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) … the mind (citta) … dhammas in dhammas, ardent (ātāpī), clearly comprehending (sampajāno), mindful (satimā), having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu is mindful. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu should dwell mindful. This is our instruction to you."
