[844] Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties (indriya). What five? The faculty of faith (saddhindriya), the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration (samādhi), and the faculty of wisdom. When, bhikkhus, a noble disciple understands as it really is (the origin and the passing away,) the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to these five faculties, this noble disciple, bhikkhus, is called a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with full awakening as his destination.
