[848] Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties (indriya). What five? The faculty of faith (saddhindriya), the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya), the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya), the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya), and the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya).
Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand, as it really is, the origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to these five faculties — those ascetics or brahmins, bhikkhus, are not acknowledged by me as ascetics among ascetics or as brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves by direct knowledge (abhiññā) in this very life, enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood.
