[131] **"Whatever (yo pana)"** means: whoever, of whatever sort … **"bhikkhu"** means: … this is the bhikkhu intended in this context.
**"With fewer than five mends (ūnapañcabandhano)"** means: a bowl (patta) with no mend, or one mend, or two mends, or three mends, or four mends.
**"Without room for a mend (abandhanokāso)"** means: a bowl which has no crack of two fingerbreadths.
**"With room for a mend (bandhanokāso)"** means: a bowl which has a crack of two fingerbreadths.
**"New (navo)"** means: a bowl is so called with reference to the asking (viññatti).
**"Should have it procured in exchange (cetāpeyya)"** means: he asks for it. In the effort there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); upon obtaining it, it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya); it must be forfeited in the midst of the Saṅgha.
All should assemble taking their determined (adhiṭṭhita) bowls. An inferior bowl should not be determined with the thought, "I shall take a valuable bowl." If he determines an inferior bowl with the thought, "I shall take a valuable bowl," there is an offense of wrong-doing.
And thus, bhikkhus, should it be forfeited.
