[253] One who is fully ordained (upasampanna), not desiring to jeer at, not desiring to scorn, not desiring to humiliate one not fully ordained (anupasampanna), but desiring to make a joke, speaks thus [by insinuation], saying: "We are not caṇḍālas, not basket-weavers, not hunters, not cart-makers, not refuse-sweepers" ... [and so on, down to:] he says: "We are not wise, not competent, not intelligent, not learned, not speakers of the Dhamma; there is no bad destination for us; only a good destination is to be expected for us" — there is an offense of wrong speech (dubbhāsita) for each and every utterance.
