[83] Bhikkhus, one possessed of four qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as surely as if carried and placed there. Of which four? Without investigating and without scrutinizing, he speaks praise of one who deserves dispraise; without investigating and without scrutinizing, he speaks dispraise of one who deserves praise; without investigating and without scrutinizing, he displays confidence in a ground that does not inspire confidence; without investigating and without scrutinizing, he displays lack of confidence in a ground that inspires confidence. One possessed of these four qualities, bhikkhus, is deposited in hell as surely as if carried and placed there.
Bhikkhus, one possessed of four qualities is deposited in heaven (sagga) as surely as if carried and placed there. Of which four? Having investigated and scrutinized, he speaks dispraise of one who deserves dispraise; having investigated and scrutinized, he speaks praise of one who deserves praise; having investigated and scrutinized, he displays lack of confidence in a ground that does not inspire confidence; having investigated and scrutinized, he displays confidence in a ground that inspires confidence. One possessed of these four qualities, bhikkhus, is deposited in heaven as surely as if carried and placed there.
