[26] Bhikkhus, these seven dhammas lead to the decline of a bhikkhu who is a trainee (sekha). What seven? Delight in work, delight in talk, delight in sleep, delight in company, not guarding the doors of the sense faculties (indriya), immoderation in eating; and, when there are duties for the Saṅgha to be done in the Saṅgha, a bhikkhu does not reflect thus in regard to them: "There are in the Saṅgha elders of long standing, long gone forth, bearers of the burden; they will be answerable for those duties" — instead he engages in the exertion himself. These, bhikkhus, are the seven dhammas that lead to the decline of a bhikkhu who is a trainee. Bhikkhus, these seven dhammas lead to the non-decline of a bhikkhu who is a trainee. What seven? No delight in work, no delight in talk, no delight in sleep, no delight in company, guarding the doors of the sense faculties, moderation in eating; and, when there are duties for the Saṅgha to be done in the Saṅgha, a bhikkhu reflects thus in regard to them: "There are in the Saṅgha elders of long standing, long gone forth, bearers of the burden; they will be answerable for those duties" — and he does not engage in the exertion himself. These, bhikkhus, are the seven dhammas that lead to the non-decline of a bhikkhu who is a trainee.
