[201] Bhikkhus, one possessed of forty qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as if carried and put down there. Of which forty? One oneself destroys life (pāṇātipāta), encourages another in the destruction of life, approves of the destruction of life, and speaks in praise of the destruction of life; one oneself takes what is not given (adinnādāna), encourages another in taking what is not given, approves of taking what is not given, and speaks in praise of taking what is not given; one oneself engages in sexual misconduct (kāmesu micchācāra), encourages another in sexual misconduct, approves of sexual misconduct, and speaks in praise of sexual misconduct; one oneself speaks falsely (musāvāda), encourages another in false speech, approves of false speech, and speaks in praise of false speech; one oneself speaks maliciously (pisuṇā vācā), encourages another in malicious speech, approves of malicious speech, and speaks in praise of malicious speech; one oneself speaks harshly (pharusā vācā), encourages another in harsh speech, approves of harsh speech, and speaks in praise of harsh speech; one oneself engages in frivolous talk (samphappalāpa), encourages another in frivolous talk, approves of frivolous talk, and speaks in praise of frivolous talk; one is oneself covetous (abhijjhālu), encourages another in covetousness, approves of covetousness, and speaks in praise of covetousness; one oneself has a mind of ill will (byāpannacitta), encourages another in ill will, approves of ill will, and speaks in praise of ill will; one oneself holds wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), encourages another in wrong view, approves of wrong view, and speaks in praise of wrong view.
