[598] Bhikkhus, one possessed of three qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as if carried and put there. Of which three? One destroys life (pāṇātipāta) oneself, one encourages another in the destruction of life, and one approves of the destruction of life. Possessed of these three qualities, bhikkhus, one is deposited in hell as if carried and put there.
Bhikkhus, one possessed of three qualities is deposited in heaven (sagga) as if carried and put there. Of which three? One abstains from the destruction of life oneself, one encourages another in abstention from the destruction of life, and one approves of abstention from the destruction of life … One takes what is not given (adinnādāna) oneself, one encourages another in taking what is not given, and one approves of taking what is not given … One abstains from taking what is not given oneself, one encourages another in abstention from taking what is not given, and one approves of abstention from taking what is not given … One engages in sexual misconduct oneself, one encourages another in sexual misconduct, and one approves of sexual misconduct … One abstains from sexual misconduct oneself, one encourages another in abstention from sexual misconduct, and one approves of abstention from sexual misconduct … One speaks falsely (musāvāda) oneself, one encourages another in false speech, and one approves of false speech … One abstains from false speech oneself, one encourages another in abstention from false speech, and one approves of abstention from false speech … One speaks maliciously (pisuṇā vācā) oneself, one encourages another in malicious speech, and one approves of malicious speech … One abstains from malicious speech oneself, one encourages another in abstention from malicious speech, and one approves of abstention from malicious speech … One speaks harshly (pharusā vācā) oneself, one encourages another in harsh speech, and one approves of harsh speech … One abstains from harsh speech oneself, one encourages another in abstention from harsh speech, and one approves of abstention from harsh speech … One indulges in frivolous talk (samphappalāpa) oneself … one encourages another in frivolous talk, and one approves of frivolous talk … One abstains from frivolous talk oneself, one encourages another in abstention from frivolous talk, and one approves of abstention from frivolous talk … One is covetous (abhijjhālu) oneself, one encourages another in covetousness (abhijjhā), and one approves of covetousness … One is uncovetous oneself, one encourages another in non-covetousness, and one approves of non-covetousness … One is of a mind of ill will (byāpannacitta) oneself, one encourages another in ill will (byāpāda), and one approves of ill will … One is of a mind without ill will oneself, one encourages another in non-ill will, and one approves of non-ill will … One holds wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi) oneself, one encourages another in wrong view, and one approves of wrong view … One holds right view (sammādiṭṭhi) oneself, one encourages another in right view, and one approves of right view. Possessed of these three qualities, bhikkhus, one is deposited in heaven as if carried and put there.
