[545] Asked by him, Mātali the deva-charioteer explained; knowing the result (vipāka) of evil deeds (pāpakamma), he declared it to one who knew not: "Those in the world of the living who are of thoroughly evil character, who harm and revile a man or a woman of no evil character — they, of thoroughly evil character, doers of cruel deeds, having engendered evil: these are the people who lie here, struck down with bars."
