[136] When [a thing] is designated for one purpose, and she, perceiving it as designated for that purpose, has it exchanged for something else, it is to be relinquished, an offense of pācittiya entailing relinquishment (nissaggiya pācittiya). When it is designated for one purpose, and she, being in doubt, has it exchanged for something else, it is an offense of pācittiya entailing relinquishment. When it is designated for one purpose, and she, perceiving it as not designated for that purpose, has it exchanged for something else, it is an offense of pācittiya entailing relinquishment.
Having received back what was relinquished, it should be applied in accordance with the original gift (yathādāna).
When it is not designated for a particular purpose, and she perceives it as designated for a particular purpose, there is an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa). When it is not designated for a particular purpose, and she is in doubt, there is an offense of wrongdoing. When it is not designated for a particular purpose, and she perceives it as not designated for a particular purpose, there is no offense.
