[168] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time a chief minister named Ārohanta had gone forth among the bhikkhus, and his former wife (purāṇadutiyikā) had gone forth among the bhikkhunīs. Now at that time that bhikkhu was taking his meal in the presence of that bhikkhunī. Then, while that bhikkhu was eating, that bhikkhunī stood attending upon him with drinking water and with a fan, and she spoke talk connected with household life, speaking flirtatiously. Then that bhikkhu rebuked that bhikkhunī: "Sister, do not act in such a way; this is not proper."
"Formerly you used to do this and that to me; now you cannot endure even this much!" — and having dashed the bowl of drinking water down upon his head, she gave him a blow with the fan.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How indeed can a bhikkhunī give a blow to a bhikkhu?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that a bhikkhunī gave a blow to a bhikkhu?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, how indeed can a bhikkhunī give a blow to a bhikkhu? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Whatever bhikkhunī should stand attending upon a bhikkhu while he is eating, with drinking water or with a fan, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya).'"
