[217] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, the monastery (ārāma) of Anāthapiṇḍika. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī, having quarreled with the bhikkhunīs, wept, striking herself again and again.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … They criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the noble lady Caṇḍakālī weep, striking herself again and again?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī weeps, striking herself again and again?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī weep, striking herself again and again? Bhikkhus, this does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhunī should weep, striking herself again and again, incurs an offense of expiation (pācittiya)."
