[23] What at that time is sustained thought (vicāra)? That which at that time is ranging (cāra), sustained ranging (vicāra), continued ranging (anuvicāra), close ranging (upavicāra), the mind's (citta) continuous connection (anusandhanatā), the mind's sustained observation (anupekkhanatā) — this at that time is sustained thought.
