Suññatavāra

[425] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)? On the occasion when one develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), tending to dispersion (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): with the subsiding of thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra) … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the first jhāna … one enters and dwells in the fifth jhāna, "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ)" — [this is] the wholesome (kusala) … "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge, emptiness (suññata)" — [this is] the resultant (vipāka) … "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge" — [this is] the wholesome … "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge, signless (animitta)" — [this is] the resultant … "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge" — [this is] the wholesome … "of painful practice and sluggish superknowledge, desireless (appaṇihita)" — [this is] the resultant: on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are indeterminate.
