[641] Which form (rūpa) is clung-to (upādinna) and a great essential (mahābhūta)? Due to kamma having been done (kammassa katattā): the tangible sense base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) and the water element (āpodhātu) — this is that form which is clung-to and a great essential. Which form is clung-to and not a great essential? The eye sense base (cakkhāyatana) … the body sense base (kāyāyatana), the femininity faculty (itthindriya), the masculinity faculty (purisindriya), the life faculty (jīvitindriya); or whatever other form there is due to kamma having been done: the form sense base (rūpāyatana), the odor sense base (gandhāyatana), the taste sense base (rasāyatana), the space element (ākāsadhātu), the growth of form (upacaya), the continuity of form (santati), edible food (kabaḷīkāra āhāra) — this is that form which is clung-to and not a great essential. Which form is not clung-to (anupādinna) and a great essential? Not due to kamma having been done: the tangible sense base and the water element — this is that form which is not clung-to and a great essential. Which form is not clung-to and not a great essential? The sound sense base (saddāyatana), bodily intimation (kāyaviññatti), verbal intimation (vacīviññatti), lightness of form (lahutā), malleability of form (mudutā), wieldiness of form (kammaññatā), decay of form (jaratā), impermanence of form (aniccatā); or whatever other form there is not due to kamma having been done: the form sense base, the odor sense base, the taste sense base, the space element, the growth of form, the continuity of form, edible food — this is that form which is not clung-to and not a great essential.
