[699] Which phenomena (dhammā) are both roots (hetū) and associated with roots (hetusampayuttā)?
Greed (lobha) is both a root and associated with a root through delusion (moha); delusion is both a root and associated with a root through greed. Hatred (dosa) is both a root and associated with a root through delusion; delusion is both a root and associated with a root through hatred. Non-greed (alobha), non-hatred (adosa), non-delusion (amoha) — these are both roots and associated with roots through one another. These phenomena are both roots and associated with roots.
Which phenomena are associated with roots but not roots?
Whichever phenomena are associated with those phenomena — setting aside those phenomena [the roots] — namely: the feeling aggregate (vedanākkhandha) … the consciousness aggregate (viññāṇakkhandha). These phenomena are associated with roots but not roots.
