[979] Which phenomena (dhammā) are accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā)?
Among the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome (kusala), the four arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by equanimity; among the unwholesome (akusala), six; among the results (vipāka) of the sense-sphere wholesome, ten; among the results of the unwholesome, six; among the functional (kiriyā), six; the form-sphere (rūpāvacara) fourth jhāna, as wholesome, as result, and as functional; the four formless states (āruppa), as wholesome, as result, and as functional; the supramundane (lokuttara) fourth jhāna, as wholesome and as result — setting aside the equanimity that has arisen herein — these phenomena are accompanied by equanimity.
Which phenomena are not accompanied by equanimity?
Among the sense-sphere wholesome, the four arisings of mind accompanied by joy (somanassa); among the unwholesome, six; among the results of the sense-sphere wholesome, six; among the results of the unwholesome, one; among the functional, five; the form-sphere three-and-fourfold jhānas (tikacatukkajjhānā), as wholesome, as result, and as functional; the supramundane three-and-fourfold jhānas, as wholesome and as result; and equanimity, form (rūpa), and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not accompanied by equanimity.
