[252] The twenty-two faculties (indriya) are not clingings (upādāna). Ten faculties are subject to clinging (upādāniya); three faculties are not subject to clinging (anupādāniya); nine faculties are sometimes subject to clinging, sometimes not subject to clinging. Sixteen faculties are dissociated from clinging (upādāna-vippayutta); six faculties are sometimes associated with clinging (upādāna-sampayutta), sometimes dissociated from clinging. Ten faculties cannot be said to be "both clingings and subject to clinging"; they are subject to clinging but not clingings. Three faculties cannot be said to be either "both clingings and subject to clinging" or "subject to clinging but not clingings." Nine faculties cannot be said to be "both clingings and subject to clinging"; sometimes they are subject to clinging but not clingings, sometimes they cannot be said to be "subject to clinging but not clingings." Sixteen faculties cannot be said to be either "both clingings and associated with clinging" or "associated with clinging but not clingings." Six faculties cannot be said to be "both clingings and associated with clinging"; sometimes they are associated with clinging but not clingings, sometimes they cannot be said to be "associated with clinging but not clingings." Ten faculties are dissociated from clinging but subject to clinging; three faculties are dissociated from clinging and not subject to clinging; three faculties are sometimes dissociated from clinging but subject to clinging, sometimes dissociated from clinging and not subject to clinging; six faculties are sometimes dissociated from clinging but subject to clinging, sometimes dissociated from clinging and not subject to clinging, and sometimes cannot be said to be either "dissociated from clinging but subject to clinging" or "dissociated from clinging and not subject to clinging."
