Saṁmappadhānavibhaṅgasuttantabhājanīya

[468] "Makes an effort" (vāyamati): Therein, what is effort (vāyāma)? That which is the mental arousing of energy (viriyārambha) … right effort (sammāvāyāma) — this is called "effort." He is endowed with this effort, fully endowed with it, come to it, fully come to it, possessed of it, fully possessed of it, furnished with it. Therefore it is said, "makes an effort."
