[486] "He makes an effort": therein, what is effort (vāyāma)?
That arousing of energy (vīriyārambha) which is mental (cetasika): exertion, endeavor, striving, effort, zeal, perseverance, vigor, steadfastness, the state of unflagging endeavor, the state of not relinquishing desire (chanda), the state of not laying down the task, firmly taking up the task; energy (vīriya), the energy faculty (vīriyindriya), the power of energy (vīriyabala), right effort (sammāvāyāma), the energy factor of awakening (vīriya-sambojjhaṅga), a factor of the path, included in the path — this is called effort. He is endowed with this effort, fully endowed; has come to it, fully come to it; has attained it, fully attained it; is possessed of it. Therefore it is said, "he makes an effort."
