Saṁmappadhānavibhaṅgasuttantabhājanīya

[474] "He makes effort" (vāyamati): Herein, what is effort (vāyāma)? That arousing of energy (viriyārambha) which is mental (cetasika) … right effort (sammāvāyāma) — this is called effort. He is endowed with … possessed of this effort; therefore it is said, "he makes effort."
